Onion Portage Archeological District, located at a caribou migration river crossing point, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Alaska because it has been used by many cultures over millennia. Archaeologists have located nine complexes from this site ranging from approximately 6500BCE to 1700AD. This has been a critical site for determining cultural chronology in the region. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978.[2]
